Engedi works in an area of Central Asia that has a population of 75 million people—yet there are less than 4,000 followers of Jesus. Most of these people have never heard the name of Jesus, have never read a Bible, and have never been invited to a church. Our vision is to establish self-sustaining, self-governing and self-propagating churches throughout the region.
We’re sharing the freedom that can only come through Jesus. This is an Islamic area. There’s a mosque in every neighborhood. The call to prayer is heard five times every day. Our vision is to break the chains of Islam and share the freedom that comes through Jesus.
The area in which we are working is also heavily vested in the sex trade. Here, men visit brothels where there is a constant demand for non-Muslim women, since Muslim women are not to be defiled. Some of these women have fled persecution only to find themselves enslaved in the sex trade, while other women are enticed by the promise of good jobs. Our vision is to raise awareness of human trafficking, provide care for those who are rescued, and bring to justice those who commit the crime.
Members of the Engedi community take regular short-term mission internships and trips to Central Asia, where we partner with a family who is planting churches. We’ve taken weeks to raise awareness locally. We’ve hosted film screenings to help raise money and awareness by educating our local community about human trafficking.
