Shoes: a simple solution to a serious problem.

Imagine a place where education is one of the few ways that you’re able to get ahead. If you can’t get to school you face the possibility of making less than $1 a day for the rest of your life. Now imagine that for you get to school all that you need is a pair of shoes. Not a book, not a pencil, not a uniform, but simply shoes. This seems like it would be a simple thing for most children to go to school yet many of the Mayan children in Guatemala are too poor to afford even one pair of shoes.Guatemalan children must have shoes to be able to go to school. But in indigenous communities, most of the children are too poor to afford even one pair of shoes.

No shoes = no school. No school = less opportunity.

Engedi Church, in partnership with Pray America, is working to tear down social barriers and provide indigenous children with the opportunity to get an education.

The Manos de Jesus Shoe Factory is located in Monte Flor, Guatemala, where local cobblers are employed to make shoes for local children. For only $10, one Guatemalan child can receive a pair of shoes and finally go to school.

Through Tread, the Engedi community runs in the Tulip Time Run to raise money that buys shoes for Guatemalan children. You can run 5k or 10k or, if you’re not the running type, you can write a check.
