March 15–25
A group from Engedi is traveling to Choma, Zambia to help our partners there. While in Zambia, they will:
- Help with an ongoing agriculture project
- Meet and build relationships with ministry partners
- Share Christ’s love with the vulnerable including orphans and people living with HIV/AIDS
- Spend time learning about our Trust in Choma and their long term goal of achieving self-sustainability
- Soak in some of Zambia’s natural beauty

On March 15 eleven Engedi folks are embarking on a journey. Thirty-four hours after departing from Chicago, the group will arrive in Lusaka, Zambia and begin the four hour mini-bus ride to Choma. Choma Central Pilgrim Wesleyan Church, our sister church, will be our first stop as we impact the people of Zambia with prayer, encouragement, friendship, and finances.
Choma Central is active in their community caring for orphans, the poor and vulnerable, and people living with HIV/AIDS. Engedi is working together with Choma Central to develop the Choma community through local enterprise, community health, sustainable living programs, education and awareness. Our hope is that together we can alleviate suffering and injustice, and spread the love of Christ throughout the community.
Two agricultural projects currently fund the community outreach programs: a garden and two fish ponds. Soon a third will be added: the Afri-hen poultry house, which is still under construction but should be ready for chickens by the time the team arrives. The team traveling will be spending time building relationships with those involved with the community outreach at Choma Central, taking part in the agricultural activities and also going on home visits in the community. These home visits will bring the Engedi folks into the homes of the orphans, poor and vulnerable, and people living with HIV/AIDS.
A few organizations that Choma Central is related to within the area have also extended an invitation to visit. These organizations are actively making Zambia a stronger Christian nation by using their influence and resources to impact the next generation of leaders. We will visit with their staff and their community programs to learn, encourage and impact lives for the glory of God.
- Fortress Vision provides African youth with an alternative to a life of sex and drugs through music. It also provides psychosocial benefits to individuals who have experienced the trauma and grief of being orphaned by AIDS or sexually exploited.
- Africa’s Child Zambia exists to reverse the spread of extreme poverty and HIV/AIDS through equipping and educating the local Christian church to meet the felt needs of their communities, spiritually, emotionally and physically with a focus on advocacy and intervention for orphans and vulnerable children suffering with HIV and other childhood diseases.
- Hope for Grieving Children, Africa is an organization committed to working with pastors, families, orphans, and leaders in the community to help orphaned children reach their full potential by addressing the many symptoms of grief they experience due to parental loss.
At the close of the trip, we will take a day and spend it relaxing in the glory of God’s creation with a game drive (safari) and a trip to Victoria Falls. Our Engedi friends will then begin the journey home on March 24, 2012 – no doubt with their minds and hearts full from their experiences.
